TMJ & TMD Treatment
Temporomandibular joint disorders, referred to as TMD or TMJ, are muscle and joint problems that occur in the jaw. They can cause dysfunction and pain, making it hard to eat or even talk without discomfort. There are many possible causes of TMJ, including misalignment of the jaw, missing teeth, teeth grinding/bruxism and other issues. As part of our general dentistry treatments at Taylor Dental & Implant Center, we help our patients suffering from temporomandibular joint disorders find relief from the pain.
TMD/TMJ is usually evident in the symptoms it can cause. Most commonly, those with TMJ disorders will have continual jaw or facial pain. The jaw area can be tender to the touch or hurt when opening or closing the mouth. Some other symptoms of these disorders include:
- Popping or clicking in the jaw
- Problems opening or closing the mouth
One of the issues with TMD is that it can be misdiagnosed, especially if the symptoms are earaches or headaches. However, a dental exam can help accurately diagnose TMD and offer treatment options to help relieve the discomfort and dysfunction.
Jaw Pain, Facial Pain Relief!
Treatment for TMJ depends on what is causing the stress on the jaw joint. In some cases, something as simple as wearing a dental nightguard can alleviate pressure on the jaw and stop nocturnal teeth grinding that can cause TMD. We can create customized nightguards for TMJ at our office, giving many people relief from their symptoms.
Other treatments can help align the teeth and lessen the pressure on the jaw. Orthodontics, like our clear aligners, give some people with TMJ relief. For others, replacing missing teeth can help with the jaw pain by fixing their alignment.
